The world of fishing rods continues to evolve, and the Level NGXC casting rod is a testament to innovation in design and functionality. Released during ICAST 2025, this rod builds upon the success of its predecessor, the NGX, with a noteworthy feature: cork handles, enhancing its appeal for both new and experienced anglers.
"The NGXC is quite similar to the NGX," noted Shaye Baker, a fishing rod reviewer. "But the key difference was noticeable right away — Level replaced the NGX’s EVA foam/carbon handles with cork handles on the NGXC." This change not only provides a visual update but also addresses the need for comfort during extended fishing trips.
Baker's hands-on experience with both rods shines a light on the subtle yet significant improvements. He shared, "I inadvertently tested a very similar power, action, and length of rod in the NGX and NGXC. So, this one felt right at home and brought back fond memories when I first picked it up." This familiarity can be crucial for anglers looking to build on their prior skills.
During his first outings, Baker took the NGXC for a test drive with a swim jig. "I swam a Dirty Jigs Weekender Series Swim Jig over a thick patch of water willow and had a good bass come out of the water for it," he recounted. This incident showcased the rod's ability to perform in challenging conditions, effectively handling the fight to bring a hefty bass into the boat.
Though Baker found the rod somewhat stiffer at the tip than his usual preference for a swim jig rod, he appreciated the extra backbone support. "The added backbone was especially nice when wrestling the bass free from cover," he explained. This strength translates well for other applications, suggesting that anglers might find the NGXC suitable for techniques like frog fishing or lighter flipping and pitching.
As Baker points out, the robust design of the NGXC enhances its versatility. "I think this particular model would make for a great frog rod and light flipping and pitching rod (up to ½ an ounce)," he added. He even offered advice for those using reaction baits, suggesting a model with a slightly different action to improve hook-setting success.
The technical features of the rod further validate its premium positioning. One standout aspect is the Injected Carbon Reel Seat, designed ergonomically for comfort. "It has two grooves on each side for your palm and fingers to rest," Baker noted, highlighting the thoughtful elements incorporated into the rod's design.
The construction of the rod is equally impressive, with Toray 30/40 Ton Carbon Blanks utilized alongside Carbon X-Wrap technology, making it a strong yet sensitive option. "I believe it’s likely a bit more durable and a little stronger on account of it," Baker explained, noting its robustness is beneficial for power fishing applications.
Furthermore, Baker expressed appreciation for the grip features of the NGXC. "There’s a sure grip for two-handed casts," he indicated, referencing the effective butt grip that enhances casting precision. Coupled with Fuji K Frame Guides and alconite inserts, the rod is designed for maximum performance on the water.
The NGXC series offers a wide range of options tailored for varying fishing styles, retailing at $200. It comes in nine sizes, catering to different needs and preferences of anglers — from a 6-foot, 10-inch Medium Light/Extra Fast setup to a heavier 7-foot, 8-inch Heavy/Fast version. Baker emphasized, "This rod series is capable of handling everything from 1/8-ounce baits to 2-ouncers."
As Baker sums up his experience, the Level NGXC casting rod demonstrates a commendable blend of innovation and practicality. “It feels like a home run for those looking for a quality casting rod,” he concluded. This coming season could see an increase in anglers adding the NGXC to their gear as it combines the trusted features of the NGX with new advancements designed to enhance performance and comfort on the water.
