The 2025 Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament (KITFT) commenced recently in picturesque Kariba, bringing together amateur and professional anglers from various regions to compete for the coveted title. The excitement in the air was palpable as teams assembled, each hoping to make their mark on the leaderboard.
After the first day of fishing, the top team honors went to Charter X Ram Petroleum, which delivered exceptional performance. They not only secured the number one position but also distinguished themselves with a significant catch count, netting 20 Tigerfish and achieving a total of 53.64 points. "Our team worked seamlessly together, and we knew our strategies well, which paid off wonderfully today," said a spokesperson for Charter X Ram Petroleum.
Trailing closely behind in second place was Jongosi, registering a catch of 20 fish and amassing a total of 45.63 points. Competitors were clearly aware of Jongosi's reputation. “We came prepared, and the day unfolded just as we anticipated,” remarked team member Duncan LeRoux. He expressed satisfaction with their performance but hinted at heightened expectations for the coming days.
Fossil Group secured the third position with 30.81 points, further showcasing the competitive nature of this event. Each team’s efforts are critical as points can quickly shift over the course of the tournament.
The competition wasn’t just reserved for the teams—individual angler performances were also highlighted. Barney Rogers from Charter X Ram Petroleum stood out as the top individual angler on day one, reeling in eight fish worth 23.59 points. "It’s satisfying to not only contribute to the team but also perform well individually," Rogers commented. “The Tigerfish are a challenging catch, but it all came together today.”
Close behind him, Gideon Benade of the same team captured five fish, adding 15.49 points to their total. The synergy within Charter X Ram Petroleum was evident as their team collectively worked towards achieving their goals.
Polachem Agri Anglers showcased significant prowess as well. Keegan Bray, one of their standout anglers, caught nine fish, contributing 14.91 points. “I think we’re just getting into our stride,” Bray said. “The Tigerfish are unpredictable, but that’s part of the thrill.”
Tristan Van de Merwe, representing Hyena Sunrises, also made an impressive mark with nine fish, earning 13.24 points. He expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming days, saying, “This is a serious competition, but the thrill of being out on the water makes it all worthwhile.”
The leaderboard remained diverse, indicating a mix of formidable teams and individual talent. Teams like Zimbulk and Fin Hook were also vying for ascendance and showcased their skills with commendable catches. Each angler’s performance could easily alter the course of the tournament, as day one proved to be just the starting line.
