The 22nd Annual Sailfish Challenge made a splash this year, setting an unprecedented record for the most billfish released during a tournament in the United States. Over two exhilarating days, competing teams unleashed a staggering 1,467 sailfish across a fleet of 61 boats for a lucrative prize pool of $550,400. This momentous event took place as part of the Quest for the Crest Sailfish Series, sponsored by Raymarine.
The tournament took off on February 19th with a lively Captain's Meeting at Galuppi’s Restaurant & Sports Bar in Pompano Beach. During this gathering, teams fostered camaraderie over complimentary cocktails from local brewers like Islamorada Brewery & Distillery, and entertainment was provided by standout performances, including one from 2025 'The Voice' contestant, Adam David. The event also featured support from prominent sponsors such as Land & Sea Professionals and The Billfish Foundation, underscoring the community spirit permeating the tournament.
February 21st and 22nd saw teams hitting the waters, vying for accolades in one of the sport's hallmark events. The Grand Awards Ceremony, held on February 23rd, celebrated the tournament's victors while also emphasizing conservation efforts, with the Sailfish Challenge making a substantial donation of $5,175 to The Billfish Foundation. "We’re not just here to compete but to ensure future generations can enjoy this sport," stated tournament organizer Mark Hager.
Day One of the Sailfish Challenge kicked off with exceptional energy. By noon, an astonishing 447 sailfish had been released, setting the stage for an extraordinary competition day. The excitement culminated in an impressive total of 912 sailfish released, establishing a new record for the highest single-day total recorded in the United States.
Among the standouts on the water was the Pompano Beach local team, Native Son, helmed by Captain Art Sapp. "Our goal was to hit the ground running, and we did exactly that," said Sapp after their team released 48 fish, securing both the Day One Early Bite Award and first place in both Tier One and Tier Two Daily Calcuttas. Their total earnings for the day reached $58,420.
Close behind Native Son was the Sandman team, captained by John Dudas. They managed to pull in 37 releases by the day’s end, earning recognition for their robust late-game performance with the Day One Late Bite Award. Their efforts added $27,460 to their winnings. "We just kept our heads down and focused on the water," expressed Dudas, highlighting the team's strategy.
The competition was fiercely contested as the Yamaha-Powered team Res Ipsa Liquidur, led by Captain KC Spaulding, secured third place with 30 releases. "Every release was a nail-biter, and I couldn’t be prouder of my crew’s perseverance," Spaulding said while discussing their tight competition.
In the context of conservation, the tournament’s organizers were clear about the importance of protecting billfish populations. "We aim to make this sport sustainable while enjoying it. The bond between fishing and conservation is critical," noted Hager during the award ceremony.
