For one weekend in June, the cost of going fishing across much of the United States drops to zero. State wildlife agencies from Texas to Oregon are waiving the licence requirement on June 6 and 7, opening public waters to anyone who wants to wet a line without first buying a permit.
The list of participating states is long. Texas Parks and Wildlife is running its Free Fishing Day on Saturday, June 6, with no licence needed to fish any public water in the state. Tennessee's Bobby Wilson Free Fishing Day falls on the same Saturday. Kentucky, Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Washington and Wisconsin are all holding free-fishing days across the June 6-7 weekend, while Iowa stretches its window to three days, Friday through Sunday, June 5-7.
The details vary by state, and that is where it pays to read the fine print. Most agencies waive only the licence itself. Oregon's Department of Fish and Wildlife goes further, dropping the requirement for a licence, tag and harvest card for the weekend and pairing it with free parking at state parks. Wisconsin folds its free-fishing days into a broader Free Fun Weekend that also waives state park entry. Minnesota's Take a Kid Fishing Weekend, June 5-7, is aimed squarely at getting children on the water.
What the waivers do not remove are the rules that protect the fish. Bag limits, size limits, seasons and any water-specific regulations still apply on free-fishing days — the only thing being set aside is the fee. Anglers planning to keep trout should also check their state's rules, as some still require a separate stamp or permit even when the base licence is free.
The timing is deliberate. Agencies use the first weekend of June to recruit new anglers and reconnect lapsed ones, often stacking the dates with beginner clinics, stocked kids' ponds and loaner-gear programs. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said it would "have plenty of information about fishing activities for folks to participate in, as well as how to get a fishing license."
Not every state runs the same weekend. Arkansas's free-fishing window is the following weekend, June 12-14, with family fishing derbies on June 13, and New Jersey sets its own free-fishing days. Anglers should confirm the exact date and the specific rules with their state agency before heading out, because a "free" day in one state may not line up with the next one over.
For families, the appeal is straightforward: a no-cost, low-commitment way to try a sport that usually begins with a trip to the licence counter. For a lapsed angler, it is a reason to dig the rods out of the garage. Either way, the most expensive part of the weekend will be the bait.
