Clear Lake has taken the crown. The sprawling California fishery, 43,785 acres of it north of San Francisco, sits atop Bassmaster's 2026 "100 Best Bass Lakes" ranking — the magazine's yearly verdict on where the country's best bass fishing is found.
It was no cakewalk. Clear Lake finished ahead of a top five loaded with southern muscle: Lake J.B. Thomas in Texas (No. 2), the Thousand Islands section of New York's St. Lawrence River (No. 3), South Carolina's Santee Cooper lakes (No. 4) and Michigan's Lake St. Clair (No. 5).
"From sea to shining sea, America is blessed with an incredible variety of bass fisheries," said James Hall, editor-in-chief of Bassmaster Magazine, unveiling a list timed to the nation's 250th birthday.
Each year the magazine's editors assemble the rankings from tournament data, state fisheries records, biologist input, B.A.S.S. Nation feedback and reports from anglers nationwide. This year's 100 are grouped into Northeastern, Southeastern, Central and Western divisions, and once again the traditional bass strongholds dominated: Texas landed 10 waters, California nine.
The back half of the top 10 read like a trophy-hunter's bucket list — Lake Fork (Texas) at six, Florida's Lake Tohopekaliga and Kissimmee Chain at seven, O.H. Ivie (Texas) at eight, Florida's Withlacoochee River and Lake Rousseau at nine, and Louisiana's Caney Creek Reservoir at 10.
States that made the list wasted no time celebrating. Santee Cooper's No. 4 finish anchored a strong outing for South Carolina; Michigan anglers pointed to Lake St. Clair as a northern standout in a southern-heavy field; and three lakes apiece from Oklahoma and Alabama earned national recognition, with Florida's Kissimmee Chain again underscoring central Florida's big-bass pedigree.
For anyone planning a road trip with a rod, the ranking works as a shortlist rather than a scoreboard — a guide to where a personal-best largemouth is most likely to eat. Long a fixture near the top of the western standings and described by the magazine as the country's premier trophy-largemouth destination, Clear Lake's rise to No. 1 rewards a fishery that keeps churning out double-digit fish.
